Abbotsford House

Warkworth History Society members recently visited Abbotsford House in the Scottish Borders: the former home of Sir Walter Scott, historical novelist and poet.
The house itself was developed by Scott from a farm into a Baronial mansion in the Gothic revival style between 1817- 1825. Later it had an additional wing added to the building by his descendants.

Members had the opportunity to tour the house and admire the varied and eclectic collection of furniture, arms and armor, along with other curiosities mainly connected to Scottish History. The house has formal gardens and is situated in an estate that borders the River Tweed. Fortunately, the weather was kind to us on the day, allowing members an opportunity to explore the woodland areas, fields and river setting that make up the estate.

The visitor centre offers a nice café and shop as well as an interesting exhibition of Scott’s memorabilia and an illustrated history of the great man’s life.

Many thanks go to Jill Wharton for organising this well attended event.
The next season of lectures commences in October, on Monday the 7th with a talk on the history of cheese. Further details are available on the Warkworth history society website.
