Magna Carta Barons

The coat of arms of John Fitz Robert

The Baron of Warkworth, John Fitz Robert, was one of the principal rebel barons who secured the charter from King John in 1215.
At Runnymede, beside the Thames, the baronial army met King John in June 1215 and there, 24 of their barons and the Mayor of London were chosen to ensure the King kept his word.

Another of the Rebel Barons to sign the document was Richard de Percy, Baron of Topcliffe, who’s descendants would be give. Warkworth by the Crown in 1332

In 2015, 20 of the 22 towns and villages that made up their chief manors in 1215 came together to form the Magna Carta Barons Association and celebrate 800 years of their communities history and the connection their barons had with a document that has become the foundation of the rights and liberties of much of the English speaking world and beyond.

One of four surviving copies of the 1215 Magna Carta. This copy is one of two held at the British Library. It came from the collection of Sir Robert Cotton, who died in 1631. In 1731, a fire at Ashburnam House in Westminster, where his library was then housed, destroyed or damaged many of the rare manuscripts, which is why this copy is burnt.

It is on display inside the entrance porch at St Lawrence Church, just to the right of the inside door going into the main church.
